What can I do as a PVAC/PAWS volunteer?
Volunteer opportunities are constantly changing as we grow and develop new programs.  The volunteer program is designed to create a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages, take a look at some of the Volunteer Opportunities available at PVAC/PAWS Center.  You will get more details and learn about the latest needs and options when you attend orientation.

How do I become an PVAC/PAWS volunteer?
Follow these steps to become an PVAC/PAWS Volunteer.

1. Complete the online Volunteer Application Form
2. Select orientation date & pay Registration Fee
3. Attend Volunteer Orientation of your choice
4. VOLUNTEER!!!

Are there any ongoing requirements for volunteering?
Our volunteer management system (Volgistics) has a licensing fee for each user, so the system regularly removes volunteers whose account is inactive, therefore we ask that volunteers commit to at least 6 hours per month of service.

Additionally, we require all volunteers to adhere to the PVAC/PAWS Policies, you must agree to these policies in order to submit a volunteer application.  Any questions or concerns about the policies may be directed to volunteer@pvaconline.com.

I need to fulfill community service hours, what should I do?
If you are seeking community service hours for a pending or completed court case, please contact Facilities Manager at (956) 686-1141 ext. 25 or facilities@pvaconline.com:

  • Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday between 9:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M.
  • Bring court order papers and proof of ID
  • Must be 18 years or older

If you are seeking community service hours for school, an organization, or personal pleasure, please follow the steps in How do I become a PVAC/PAWS volunteer?

PVAC/PAWS Volunteers can track their volunteers hours using our Volunteer Portal. If you require other documentation regarding volunteer hours including PVAC/PAWS letterhead, please contact volunteer@pvaconline.com.

I completed the online application, now what?
After submitting the online Volunteer Application Form, a confirmation email will be sent with the selected orientation date. If you were unable to see and/or select an orientation date, this means that the current orientation dates have filled up. Please check back at a later date for the following months orientation dates.

Orientation starts promptly at the designated time and those who arrive late will not be allowed to attend orientation. Additionally, the registration fee will not transfer to a later date if you arrive late or fail to attend. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before the start of orientation to fill out the required paperwork*.

*Minors ages 16 & 17 must print the Volunteer Service Agreement, have their parent/guardian sign the form, & bring the completed form to orientation. Without the completed form minors will not be able to volunteering.

Why is PVAC/PAWS charging a fee to volunteer?
We are very fortunate that a lot of people are interested in volunteering at PVAC/PAWS.  However, in spite of easily filling up multiple orientation sessions a month, the actual number of volunteers who attend and volunteer long-term is very small (approximately 10% after a year).  This is typical for non-profits, but it means that our staff spends a great deal of time and effort on training new volunteers when they are needed in other areas.

The registration fee will guarantee a seat at the Volunteer Orientation you select, this fee helps cover the monthly cost of the volunteer management system, Volgistics, which is use to track individual and overall volunteer hours. The registration fee is not refundable/transferable, please see ORIENTATION & FEE POLICY.

Registration fees help PVAC/PAWS continue to provide volunteers with a meaningful and fulling volunteer experience. If the registration fee constitutes a financial hardship for you, you may request a fee waiver by contacting volunteer@pvaconline.com.

How long is orientation?
Volunteer Orientation includes a presentation, demonstration & facility tour and typically lasts an hour and a half. It is important to stay for the duration to complete the volunteer registration process.

Can I just come walk dogs?
For the safety of the animals, volunteers, guests, and staff; completion of the PVAC/PAWS VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION PROCESS is required prior to walking dogs at PVAC/PAWS.
