Pet Loss & Grief Support Group

Grieving the loss of a pet?

For many of us, our pets are family members. When it’s time to say goodbye, the resulting sense of loss and grief is as real and sometimes as overwhelming as when we lose a relative or human friend.

Grieving the loss of a friend or companion is a sign of the love that existed between you. The first step in coping with your grief is to acknowledge your feelings. At PAWS Pet Loss & Grief Support Group, you can share your feelings with others who are going through a similar experience.

Feel free to bring a picture of your beloved pet and share your pet’s story.

This free and informal support group meets monthly and is for adults 16 years and older. Reservations are not required to attend, but it is preferred. Light Refreshments will be served.

Day: 2nd Thursday of the Month*
Time: TBD
Location:  The Laurie P. Andrews PAWS Center
                    2451 N US Expressway 281-Edinburg, TX

Session will be facilitated by Kim Nguyen-Finn, Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor.   If you have questions, please contact Mari at 956-720-4563 or education@pvaconline.com for more information.

Here are a few of the topics we consider:

  • Is it unusual to feel so sad at the loss of a pet?
  • What is “normal recovery time”, or is there such a thing?
  • Euthanasia: when is it the best alternative? How to deal with the uncertainty and second-guessing that may follow, and how to explain the decision to young children.
  • How to deal with the guilt feeling that sometimes hinder healing and recovery.
  • Decisions on having another animal. How soon, if at all?

* The Pet Loss Support Group will not meet if The Laurie P. Andrews PAWS Center is closed because of a holiday or inclement weather.
